What is Medicare for Seniors?
Medicare Supplement or Medigap Plans
These policies are health insurance sold by private insurance companies to fill the “gaps” in original Medicare plan coverage. They help pay some of the health care costs that the original Medicare plan does not cover. There are 12 standardized plans (A through L) which must follow Federal and State laws. Each plan has a different set of basic and extra benefits. Not all insurance companies carry all plans.
Part C or Medicare Advantage Plans
These plans are provided by private insurance companies that have contracted with Medicare to offer the basic Medicare benefits. They may also include vision, hearing, dental and/or health/wellness programs. These plans may limit the non-emergency doctors and hospitals usage to their networks and may have different rules for obtaining services. MA plans are not supplemental coverage.
Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug) is a stand-alone drug plan offered to people who get benefits through Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Part B). It covers both brand-name and generic prescription drugs at participating pharmacies in your area.
